bhaktapur durbar square

Kathmandu Valley: Kathmandu valley is the historical center of Nepal and the place where kingdoms rose and fell, palaces and temples were built and rebuilt, and Nepalese art and culture were developed and refined is equally religious. Kathmandu valley has been called on big museum - a vast store of Hindu and Buddhist art with more shrines and temples per square km than anywhere else in the world. Nepalese culture has immense vitality and countless festivals are celebrated each year. An institution such as the ‘‘Living Goddess’’ forms a direct link between the past and the present.

The valley is above 25 km from east to west and 20 km from north to south with an area of 570 square km and a population of 1.1 million. Kathmandu is situated at a height of around 1300 meters while the surrounding hills range from 1500 meters to 2800 meters in height. Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishanker and Everest are visible from different points in the valley.

Kathmandu Durbar Square & Swayambunath Kathmandu Durbar Square: is the historic seat with its old temples and places epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people. It is here that formal Kings of Nepal are crowned and their coronations solemnized. Interesting things to seek here are; Taleju Temple built by King Mahendra Malla in 1549 A.D., Kal Bhairav, the God of destruction, Nautalle Durbar, Coronation Nasal Chowk, the Gaddi Baithak, the statue of King Pratap Malla, the Big Bell, Drum and the Jagannath Temple.

Swayambunath:
is one of the world's most glorious Buddhist Chaitya. It is said to be 2000 years old. Painted on the four sides of the spire bases are the all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. It is three kilometers west of Kathmandu city and is situated on a hillock about 77 m. above the level of the Kathmandu Valley.

Boudhanath & Pasupatinath
Boudhanath: is situated 8kms east of Kathmandu. This ancient stupa is one of the biggest in the world and the center of Buddhism in the world. It was listed in the UNESCO Heritage Monument in 1979.

Pasupatinath:
temple is situated 5 km east of Kathmandu, the temple of Lord Shiva; Pathupatinath with two tired golden roof and silver doors is considered one of the holiest shrines of Hindus. The stupa of

Patan: situated across the Bagmati River to the south of Kathmandu is known to this day for its excellent works of art and carving in wood and bronze. Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgaon, is the most medieval of the lot and is situated in the eastern part of the valley. while Kathmandu and Patan have undergone great changes in the three decades since Nepal its isolation, Bhaktapur has changed much less.

Patan locally referred to as Lalitpur and situated at the south of Kathmandu is the second largest town valley. patan's great building boom took place under the Mallas in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Numerous temples of widely diverse style as well as many Buddhist monasteries are scatterd around the fascinating town. The city is famous for its crafts and metal works which are wonderful souvenirs to be carried home.

Bhaktapur the city of Devotees

Bhaktapur Durbar Square: is located in the center of Bhaktapur. The Square is one of the most charming architectural showpieces of the Valley as it highlights some of the finest medieval arts of Nepal. The main items of interest in Bhaktapur Durbar Square are the Lion Gate, the Golden Gate and the statues of kings on stone monoliths. The Golden Gate was erected by King Ranjit Malla as the entrance to the main courtyard of the Fifty-five Windowed Palace.

The Palace of Fifty-five Windows was built during the reign of King Yakshya Malla in A.D. 1427 and was remodelled by King Bhupatindra Malla in the seventeeth century. The art gallery of Bhaktapur Durbar Square contains ancient paintings belonging to the Hindu and Buddhist traditions of various periods. This gallery is open every day except Tuesday.
Some important monuments to see in this area are:

Golden Gate: This is the main entrance to the famous 55-window palace, built by Ranjit Malla in 7 th century A.D.

Nyatapola: This is the most famous pagoda of Nepal, which was built in 1702A.D. by Bhupatendra Malla. This temple was dedicated to Siddhi-Laxmi, the tantric mother goddess of supreme power. Nyatapola in Newari means a five tiered symbolizing five basic elements - water, earth, fire, wind and sky.

55 Window Palace: This is the main structure of the entire Durbar Square, which a magnificient edifice is built by Yakshya Malla and renovated by Bhupatendra Malla.

Pashupati Temple:
According to folklore, a Bhaktapur King who was a great devotee of Lord Pashupati, had a dream in which Lord Shiva told him to build a temple for him so that he could move into it. He obeyed this command and thus the temple came into existence. The Bhaktapur city is protected as a UNESCO world Heritage site. Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgaon, it means city of the Devotees. It is the third major town of the valley and in many ways the most mediaeval. Bhaktapur's people life style and them culture enchants you and enable to give you great experience in your life time. Bhaktapur also offers you such a glory woodcarving Handicrafts and colorful thangka paintings place. Changunarayan Temple

This temple is situated on a scenic hill top 20km from Kathmandu and 7 km from Bhaktapur. King Hari dutta verma built this temple. The temple is decorated with magnificent art works made of metal and woodcarvings. This is the finest example of Nepalese pagoda architecture. The inscription at Changunarayan is the oldest recorded in history, dating to the 4th century. Its history dates back to the Lichhavi period when the Lichhavi king Manadeva installed pillars in 464 AD. The temple is worth visiting to see the architectural and iconography combination.
